Binary Ranch started in 2008 as a web hosting company. The idea was the digital frontier. We had hosting packages called pioneers and settlers. Pioneers are the risk takers. The pioneers get the arrows and the settlers get the land. It's always harder being a pioneer. The people who come along later and say they knew about it all along are the same ones who got the free rides.
We called our early investors pioneers. Our customers were settlers. The branding was there from the start. The digital frontier, the rugged Americana vibe, the idea that you stake a claim on your own land. That language wasn't metaphor then and it isn't metaphor now.
Hosting became a commodity market. Highly competitive, low margins. The business pivoted toward video production and brand development. I built SevenTalents, a media and brand company. Binary Ranch went quiet, but the ideas stayed. The domain stayed. The branding stayed. The thesis that people should own their digital life the way they own their property stayed.
The company never died. It waited for the technology to catch up to the idea.
